John Mix Stanley, the artist-explorer, embarked on a Western journey in 1842 to capture Native American life and landscapes. His 1846 gallery debut in Cincinnati and Louisville marked the start of his acclaimed career.
During the Mexican-American War, he documented Colonel Kearney's expedition and explored the Oregon Territory.
In 1865, a Smithsonian fire claimed over 200 of his works. Stanley's legacy endures as a testament to his passion for Native American life and the American West.
