Abstract Sketch I
Type:
Digital Print'Dancing Figure' (1910-1915)
Artist: Henri Gaudier-Brzeska (1891-1915)
Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, the unconventional French sculptor, honed a primal, direct carving style. Born in Saint-Jean-de-Braye near Orléans, he ventured to London in 1910. Gaudier-Brzeska's evolving view of art, from nature's allure to urban appreciation, found its solution in sculpting, inspired by his carpenter father.
Over the years he shifted his focus from Rodin to non-European art, exploring miniature forms like Japanese netsuke and art from Africa and the Pacific Islands. Gaudier-Brzeska's drawing style fused Chinese calligraphy, Cubism, and Pound's influence.
Enlisting in the French army at the outbreak of World War I, he displayed bravery but met his end in the Neuville-St.-Vaast trenches in 1915.
