Artist: Alexander Koester (1864-1932)
Upon his parents' insistence, Koester began a pharmacy apprenticeship in Winzenheim (now in France), but his true calling led him to the Academy of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe. Initially painting portraits for sustenance as a student, he later shifted his focus to the allure of landscapes.
Settling in Klausen in 1896, his interest in ducks flourished, influenced by his father-in-law's colony. Becoming an authority on duck breeds, his portraits gained popularity, with rumors suggesting he priced them based on the number of ducks depicted. The tumult of war in 1915 prompted a move to Dießen am Ammersee, steering his art toward landscapes and still-life following the loss of his son. Remarkably, his passion for ducks persisted.
