Clouds Over Campagna
Type:
Digital Print'Study of Clouds over the Roman Campagna' (c. 1782-1785 )
Artist: Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes (1750,1819)
Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes, a trailblazing French painter, played a pivotal role in elevating the stature of En plein air, or open-air painting. His artistic stay in Rome from 1778 to 1782 saw him immersed in the creation of landscape studies directly drawn from nature, often depicting the same scenery under different daylight veils. In his 1800 treatise, "Reflections and Advice to a Student on Painting, Particularly on Landscape," Valenciennes conceptualised the "landscape portrait," advocating for artists to paint directly while beholding the landscape, meticulously capturing its nuanced details. Embracing the outdoors, he harnessed the ever-changing moods of landscapes influenced by light and weather, championing the practice of painting the same view at various times.
