Artist: Auguste Pointelin (1839-1933)
Auguste Pointelin, born to lemonade-wine growers, aspired to be a painter since his teenage years. He pursued this dream while studying at Arbois college under the guidance of his drawing teacher, Victor Maire. To have more free time, he became a math teacher, working 14 hours a week instead of 20 hours for literature.
In 1865, Pointelin visited the Salon des artistes français in Paris, which showcased renowned artists like Monet and Courbet. This visit inspired him to exhibit two paintings at the Salon in 1866 but, discouraged by comparisons with other artists, he withdrew until 1869.
