Artist: Sanford Robinson Gifford (1823-1880)
Sanford Robinson Gifford, an American landscape luminary and key Hudson River School figure, conjured ethereal landscapes brimming with luminous light. Born in Greenfield, New York, to an iron foundry owner, Gifford embarked on an artistic journey in 1845, leaving Brown University. In New York City, he honed his craft under John Rubens Smith's tutelage, delving into anatomy and drawing. His first masterpiece graced the National Academy in 1847, and by 1854, he was an academician. Gifford dedicated himself to landscapes, becoming a Hudson River School icon.
