Artist: Pekka Halonen (1865-1933)
Pekka Halonen, the Finnish artist, painted his nation's landscapes and people in a distinctive national romantic style. Born in 1865, he mastered his craft at Helsinki's Art Society's Drawing School before studying under Paul Gauguin in Paris.
Halonen's art celebrated Finland's beauty and its people, evolving from Symbolism to Synthetism. In times of national challenge, his art became a symbol of Finnish pride.
