'The Grange of Borrodale'
Artist: Joseph Farington (English, 1747-1821)
Joseph Farington, an English landscape painter, resided in the Lake District between 1776 and 1780. During this period, he produced numerous drawings capturing the region's landscapes.
In 1793, Farington undertook a trip to the Netherlands to prepare illustrations for an official record of the siege of Valenciennes. Later, during the Peace of Amiens in 1802, he traveled to Paris accompanied by notable artists including Benjamin West, John Hoppner, and Johann Fuseli.
Farington's true expertise was in creating precise and detailed topographical drawings. These drawings were highly sought after for inclusion in folios of engravings depicting British views, which were popular among tourists who were restricted to Britain due to the political unrest in Europe.
